Auch heutzutage herrscht auf dem Dorfplatz ein Kommen und Gehen wie zu Zeiten der Handwagen und Kutschen. Nur sind letztere schon lange von der Bildfläche verschwunden, und so auch das Hämmern des Schmieds Arpagaus auf seinem Amboss auf der anderen Strassenseite in der «Casa fravi» (sursilvan: Haus des Schmieds). Die drei Glassäulen symbolisieren das Aufeinandertreffen verschiedener Menschen auf dem Dorfplatz, deren Austausch und deren Wünsche. Verschiedene Farbspektren überlagern sich, surreale Formen entstehen und schaffen so eine Interaktion zwischen Betrachter und Kunstwerk. Kleine Details, die den aufmerksamen Beobachter übergangslos in eine faszinierende Traumwelt mit Geschichten von Gestern, dem Hier und Jetzt und der Winterzeit entführen.2 Abends am See

Vor 10’000 Jahren schüttete der Flimser Bergsturz die Talschaft zu. In der Gegend um Laax entstanden so mehrere Seen. Der Ortsname Laax deutet bereits auf die verschiedenen Seen («See»: lateinisch «lacus», sursilvan «lag», Mehrzahl «lags») in der Umgebung hin. Fische gibt es jedoch nur im Lag Grond, unter anderem den Hecht, das Wappentier der Gemeinde Laax.
Der einheimische Dichter Flurin Camathias (1871–1946) schrieb das Gedicht «La sera sper il lag» (Abends am See), welches der Laaxer Komponist Gion Balzer Casanova in den 1990er-Jahren vertonte. Damit schenkte er dem rätoromanischen Gesang eine wahre Perle, die heute von Chören auf der ganzen Welt gesungen wird.
Werkbeschreibung
Mächtig und monumental, aber auch filigran inszeniert sich die «Perle von Laax» inmitten des Lag Grond als Symbol der dortigen Entstehungsgeschichte. Es handelt sich dabei um eine 1,5 Tonnen schwere Eisenkugel mit einem Durchmesser von 3,5 Metern. Die sich inmitten des Werkes bewegende Lichtquelle erinnert an ein pulsierendes Herz.3 MARCAU

Wenn die Laaxer Schafe – vor Jahren noch weit über fünfhundertfünfundfünfzig Stück – im Herbst wieder von der Alp Muladera ins Dorf gelangten, wurde ihre Ankunft mit der grossen Kirchenglocke angekündigt. Die Eigentümer strömten alsdann zum Plaun dil Lag, um ihre Tiere in Empfang zu nehmen und sie auf den Markt zu treiben.
Der dreitägige Markt in Marcau (sursilvan für «Markt») – auf der gegenüberliegenden Seite der Kantonsstrasse – war bereits im Mittelalter weitherum bekannt. Um jedes Rind, jedes Schaf und jeden Hammel wurde gehandelt und gefeilscht.

Scheinbar willkürlich im Raum stehende Stelen lassen den Betrachter das Geheimnis der perspektivischen Installation «Marcau» entdecken. Today, in the digital age, there is a constant coming and going just as there was in the time of horses and carriages. The latter have long since disappeared and with them the hammering of blacksmith Arpagaus across the road in the “Casa Fravi” (Rhaeto-Romance (Sursilvan) meaning The blacksmith’s house). The three glass pillars illustrate the encounter of different people, their dialogue and their dreams. Different perspectives elicit a play of colours from the artwork. Several colour spectrums overlap, surreal shapes are formed, creating a connection between observer and the artwork. The evening at the lake
10,000 years ago, a massive rockslide in Flims formed several lakes in the area surrounding Laax. The name Laax originates from the Rhaeto-Romance word “lag” (plural “lags”) meaning lakes. Fish, including the pike, which is the heraldic animal of Laax, can only be found in Lag Grond.Flurin Camathias (1871-1946), a local poet, transformed his impressions of Lag Grond into the poem “la sera sper il lag” (the evening at the lake). In the 1990s, local composer Gion Balzer Casanova composed a melody for the poem. With it, he enriched the Rhaeto-Romance chant, turning it into a true gem that is now sung by choirs all around the world.
Artistic realisation
Like a crystal that tumbled down from the mountains and came to rest in the middle of Lag Grond lies “The pearl of Laax”. It is a 1.5-ton iron ball with a diameter of 3.5 meters. Like a pulsating heart, the moving light conveys the origin of our village, its history, and our connection to our home.3 MARCAU

In autumn, the sheep of Laax, which a few years ago still numbered well over five hundred and fifty-five, came back down to the village from the Muladera mountain. Their arrival was announced by huge church bells. The farmers flocked to Plaun dil Lag to collect their animals and take them to market. The market in Marcau (meaning “market” in Romansh) is located closeby on the opposite side of the Kantonsstrasse and gained fame from as far back as the middle ages. There was a real hustle and bustle, every cow and sheep was traded and haggled over.
Artistic realisation
Stelae placed seemingly at random, allow the viewer to discover the secret of the sitespecific installation “Marcau”. Once the exact viewing angle has been found, the individual parts – which are formed of thousands of light spots – suddenly become a cohesive artwork and reveal a Romansh tongue twister to the viewer.4 Philosophical Questions
